Miss Catherine Calderwood

Miss Catherine Calderwood is in her third year at CSW, where she teaches Grammar School Latin and afternoon Kindergarten Enrichment. Prior to joining the CSW staff, Miss Calderwood spent two-and-a-half years working for USD 259 in various capacities with students in SPED and ESOL classes. Additionally, she is in her fifth year with the education department of the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Born in Wichita, Miss Calderwood graduated from Evangelical Christian Academy in Madrid, Spain before earning her Bachelor of Arts in ESL/Bilingual Elementary Education from Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. She returned to the Air Capital in 2011 to be closer to family and old friends.

The product of two generations of missionary educators, Christ has always been a crucial part of every aspect of her life. Her family’s love for the people of God’s world shaped her own world in many ways. She often leans on the promise of Psalm 139:10, “If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me.”

When she’s not teaching, Miss Calderwood enjoys reading, listening to music and photography. She recently added learning new languages and city biking to her list of favorite pastimes.

Miss Calderwood is inspired by life. “The brilliance of a morning sunrise, the joy of laughter. Even the fact that cloudy days make all the world’s colors more vibrant is inspirational,” she said. “The complexities of language make me want to jump in to learning with both feet.”

Furthermore, she loves her work at CSW. “I get home at the end of even the hardest days and I want to go back,” she said. “I love the relationship building that I do and how much the kids grow.”
